FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's cross country team had an impressive sixth place showing in today's NCAA Southeast Regional with a score of 202 points, while the women placed 24th. The race was held in Charlotte, N.C.
The Patriot men ran the race as a tight pack, with their top-5 runners finishing within one minute of each other. Robert Reynolds led the pack with a time of 30:44.84 and a 23rd place finish, classmate Everett Hackett was not far behind finishing 24th (30:46.39). Reynolds and Hackett earned all-region honors for their top-25 finishes.
"The men's squad certainly had an outstanding day and a very nice breakthrough race and the guys ran a tough, smart race and the results bear that out," expressed head coach Andrew Gerard. "Sixth is the highest place ever for a Mason team at the regional championships and the first time we've had two men earn all-region honors."
Also running for Mason was John Holt (33, 31:02.08), Alex Ott (57, 31:33.01), Stuart Crowell (65, 31:42.52), Sean Nestor (91, 32:17.24) and Andrew McGreal (178, 34:09.61).
Mason was first overall amongst CAA teams, beating out William and Mary who finished eighth.
Sophomores Bethany Sachtleben and Peyton Lowe were first and second for the women, respectively. Sachtleben finishing 30th overall with a time of 21:28.94 and Lowe finished with a time of 22:47.85 and a 126th overall finish.
"The women put in a solid effort today. We were hoping to place a little higher up," stated head coach Sita Waru-Ewell. "Bethany did a nice job for us once again up front.
We certainly gained a lot of experience today and we will continue to build from this for the future."
Jennifer Nakamura (151, 23:08.43), Katie Treichel (166, 23:25.17), Catherine Pulley (178, 23:36.35), Monique McKenzie (215, 24:35.50) and Victoria Doss (219, 24:38.79) also ran today for the women.
No. 21University of Virginia and No. 10 Duke University took first overall in the men's and women's race, respectively.
Mason will travel to New York for their last race of the season, the IC4A/ECAC Championships, on November 17th.
