PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Five George Mason men's soccer players were recognized
for their play on the field this season as the Colonial Athletic Association
handed out its annual All-CAA and All-Rookie honors on Thursday evening on the
eve of the semifinals of the conference tournament in Philadelphia.
Senior forward Taylor Morgan was tabbed to the first team,
sophomore forward Timi Mulgrew to the second team and junior classmates
midfielder Alex Herrera and defender Hugh Roberts to the third team. Additionally,
freshman Ghiles Harmouche earned All-Rookie honors.
Northeastern took home three of the major awards, as senior
forward Don Anding was selected as the Player of the Year, sophomore defender
Simon Cox shared Defensive Player of the Year honors with Hofstra junior Shaun
Foster and NU head coach Brian Ainscough shared Coach of the Year honors with
Drexel's Doug Hess. Hofstra freshman midfielder Joseph Holland was named the
Rookie of the Year.
Adding five names to the list, Mason's all-time CAA postseason
honoree total now stands at 97 since the team joined the conference in 1984.
Morgan, a senior from Southampton, England, collected all-conference
honors for the second time in his career after taking home third team honors a
season ago. In 2012, Morgan started all 19 matches for the Patriots, finishing
the season with a team and league-best 13 goals, a single-season personal best.
He recorded three two-goal matches on the season, achieving the feat in wins
over St. Francis (N.Y.), Towson and Delaware. Morgan was named the CAA Men's
Soccer Player of the Week on October 29 after registering two goals in a 2-0
win at Delaware on October 24 before leading the team with five shots in a 0-0
double-overtime draw at Northeastern.
For his career, Morgan appeared in 50 matches with 48 starts,
racking up 53 points on 23 goals and seven assists over three seasons.
A sophomore from Sterling, Mulgrew started 15 matches for Mason in
2012, tallying 21 points on eight goals and a team-high five assists. All three
totals were personal single-season bests. Mulgrew owned a four-match point
streak from September 1-15, which included a two-assist match against St.
Francis (N.Y.). He also recorded his first collegiate multi-goal game in a 3-2
loss at Old Dominion as he scored both Mason markers. It was the first
postseason honor for Mulgrew.
Taking home all-conference honors for the first time in his
career, Herrera started 16 of Mason's 19 matches this season. Herrera was a key
player in the midfield and defensive third, finishing the season with three
assists.
Another first time All-CAA honoree, Roberts started all 19 matches
for the Patriots, helping the defense post a 0.90 goals-against average and
nine shutouts on the season. He also added one goal, scoring in a 5-1 win over
Saint Peter's early in the season.
Harmouche was a key component to the Mason offense in 2012,
finishing the season with nine points on three goals and three assists, and was
the only freshman to appear in all 19 matches while making 15 starts. Harmouche
registered his first collegiate goal in the season opener against LIU Brooklyn
and followed that with his first collegiate assist two games later at American,
helping Mason capture the D.C. College Cup. He also recorded a goal in
back-to-back matches against Saint Peter's and St. Francis (N.Y.), earning CAA
Rookie of the Week honors on September 10 for his efforts in those two matches.
Mason finished the season with an 11-6-2 overall record and a 4-5-1
conference mark. The Patriots earned the No. 5 seed in the CAA Tournament,
falling to fourth-seeded Hofstra in the quarterfinals.
