FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's soccer team had a
strong defensive showing as it held Longwood without a shot, defeating the
Lancers, 1-0, on Saturday evening at George Mason Stadium.
With the win, the Patriots improved to 8-3 overall, snapping
a two-game losing streak. Longwood dropped to 3-9-1.
Mason dominated the first half, putting nine shots on the
board and three corner kicks. Breaking through in the 22nd minute,
senior Taylor Morgan registered his team-leading eighth goal of the season as
he chipped a shot to the top left corner off of the net off of a cross by
junior Zak Haapaoja to put the Patriots up, 1-0.
Maintaining the momentum in the second half, the Patriots
continued their strong offensive showing, adding eight more to the shots
column. Despite not finding the back of the net, Mason saw several attempts come
close, including a sequence of five shots over five minutes with just over 20
minutes remaining.
Morgan started the run with two consecutive shots that
sailed high before freshman Brice Colcombe registered a shot that bounced off
of the left post in the 70th minute. Taylor then added two more
attempts, taking a shot that was stopped by Longwood keeper Paul Hegedus.
However, the rebound bounced back to Mason where sophomore Brennan Zizi
one-touched the ball back to Morgan, who sent a shot just wide of finding the
open right side of the net.
Longwood's best scoring attempt came in the 90th
minute with a free kick from just outside of the left side of the box but Mason
was able to quell the threat, holding the Lancers shotless for the contest.
Senior Dustin Butcher played the duration for Mason to pick
up his eighth win and fourth shutout of the season. Hegedus played all 90:00
for Longwood, stopping four shots.
The Patriots return to CAA action on Wednesday, hosting
Drexel at 7:00 p.m. The Dragons are 7-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the CAA after
defeating UNCW, 2-0, on Saturday.
