BOSTON - The George Mason women's volleyball team traveled to the top
team in the Colonial Athletic Association on Friday night, and the Patriots
were unable to deal Northeastern their first conference loss of the season as
the Huskies came away with a sweep at Solomon Court. Set scores were 25-22,
25-23, 26-24.
Mason (3-13, 1-2 CAA) was led by 18 kills from junior Lana
Zonjic, along with a double-double by classmate Tori Price who added 32 assists
and 11 digs, both team highs. Kelly Bacon had 10 kills to pace the Huskies
(14-3, 4-0).
Northeastern grabbed the early lead in the first set, an
advantage that grew to five at 11-6. Mason stormed back with a 6-1 run that
tied it at 12, but despite staying within four, Mason could not tie the score.
After seeing its lead dwindle to 23-22, the Huskies used kills by Bacon and Ava
Cramp to close out the first set.
In the second set, the Huskies would again lead early but
Mason scored four points in a row to take their first lead of the match, 12-10.
The difference between the two teams would not grow larger than two points in
the stanza, though, including a 22-all tie following a kill by Zonjic. Jillian
Briner and Ina Kamenova each had kills which made it set point, and after a
Bacon error, Briner gave the Huskies the two-set lead with a kill.
Out of the break, Mason had a strong start with a 5-2
opening run in the third set. The Patriots led nearly wire-to-wire in the third
set, and even had a chance at set point after Zonjic and junior Laura Spencer
each had a kill to leave the score 24-21. Northeastern prevented a fourth set
though with five consecutive points, capturing the match on a kill by Nicole
Bishop.
The Patriots conclude their road trip on Sunday afternoon
with a 1 p.m. first serve at Hofstra.
