HARRISONBURG, Va. - The George Mason women's soccer team
kept James Madison scoreless for 103 minutes of action, but the Dukes broke
through in the 104th minute to pull out a double-overtime Colonial
Athletic Association win Thursday night at University Park.
Mason (5-8-1, 1-3-1 CAA) outshot James Madison 8-2 in shots
on goal and 12-9 overall, but was unable to capitalize on several scoring
opportunities. Tiana Kallenberger led Mason offensively with four shots, all on
goal, while Kelly Pizzingrilli and Liz Hodges each posted two shots. For the
Dukes (4-9, 2-2), Lauren Wilson posted both shots on goal as goalkeeper Marlee
Stynchula made eight stops to keep Mason scoreless. Lyndse Hokanson recorded
her lone save in the first half for the Patriots. Madison finished with seven
corner kicks and Mason attempted six.
After a scoreless first overtime period which witnessed a Hodges
shot on goal, James Madison broke through in the 104th minute.
Wilson scored the game-winning goal collecting a through ball from Katie Menzie
at midfield. Wilson carried the ball to the top of the box and as Hokanson came
out to intercept the play, Wilson snuck behind Hokanson and put the shot into
the left corner of the net to seal the 1-0 win.
Two minutes earlier, Hodges tried to find the back of the
net for the Patriots, forcing Stynchula to leap to make the catch.
Mason wasted no time attacking to start the second period as
Kallenberger struck a shot from 16-yards out in the left corner, forcing
Stynchula to drop to her knees at the far post to block the shot. Kallenberger's
attempt in the 47th minute came off a Cardoso corner kick.
The Dukes tried to capitalize on a free kick in the 53rd
minute when Becky Sparks blasted the free kick from midfield to the left corner
of the box. Kelly Germain headed the attempt from three-yards out, but the shot
went wide of the net.
Pizzingrilli had a breakaway opportunity in the 71st
minute as the sophomore received the ball from Emma Starr at midfield, carried
the ball down the near side and sailed a shot to the top left corner of the net
from 35-yards out, but the attempt went wide.
In the first period, the Dukes tried to gain the early lead
on a header from Sparks that went just above the crossbar in the third minute. Although
both teams got a couple shots off in the next 20 minutes, neither squad was
able to put a shot on frame until Nicole Clark in the 24th minute.
Clark's blast from 30-yards out in the center of the field
was saved by Stynchula as Clark tried to complete a Jazmin Cardoso pass.
In the 44th minute, the Dukes saw a solid scoring
opportunity when Madyson Brown, standing at the near post, received a pass from
Shannon Rano five-yards outside the box on the far side. Brown collected the
pass and looked for the right corner, but the shot hit the right post and
bounced over the net.
Mason put three shots on goal to JMU's one in the opening
period as the Dukes held a slight 4-3 edge in corner kicks after the first 45
minutes.
The Patriots return to the pitch following a week's break
when they travel to Hofstra on Friday, October 12 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
