BROOKLINE, Mass. - Facing a team undefeated in conference
play on their home turf, the George Mason men's soccer team battled the
Northeastern Huskies to a 0-0 draw in Colonial Athletic Association action
Saturday evening at Parsons Field.
With the draw, Mason picked up a point in the standings and
is now 11-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the conference. Northeastern moved to 11-1-4
and 6-0-3 in the CAA.
"Tonight was a good result in a place that is difficult to
play and get results," said head coach Greg Andrulis. "Both goalkeepers made
key saves in the second half and our guys were solid tonight."
The first half saw a battle for possession and scoring
opportunities, as both squads put up three shots. Mason's best opportunities
came early in the opening stanza off of a shot by senior Paul Andrews in the 11th
minute and another by Taylor Morgan in the 15th minute that forced
NU keeper Oliver Blum to come up with saves.
Northeastern opened the second stanza with a near goal just
one minute in, but Mason junior keeper Sean Cote came up with the save. Morgan
again put shots on goal in the 75th and 80th minutes only
to see them gobbled up by Blum, and the Patriot defense came up big in the 89th
minute after blocking an NU shot from Jonathan Eckford to keep the match
knotted at 0-0 and send it to extra minutes.
Mason put up two shots in the first overtime session, both
by Morgan, but couldn't come up with a goal as the Patriots recorded their
first draw of the season.
Cote played the entire match for Mason, coming up with six
key saves for his first shutout of the season. Blum played the duration for NU,
also stopping six shots faced.
The Patriots conclude regular-season action on Wednesday as
they travel to Georgia State for a 7:00 pm affair.
