FAIRFAX, Va. - Seniors Tiana Kallenberger, Mary Kate Lowry
and Cami Verschooris were recognized before the start of Sunday's George Mason
women's soccer game as the Patriots hosted Colonial Athletic Association foe
UNCW. Mason dropped a 4-0 decision to the Seahawks despite outshooting the
visiting squad in the second half.
Mason dipped to 6-11-1 overall and 2-6-1 in league play with
the loss, while UNCW improved to 11-6-1, 6-3. For the game, UNCW narrowly
outshot Mason, 13-10, including a 10-7 shots on goal advantage, while UNCW
goalkeeper Caitlin Hunter made seven stops in net to keep the Patriots off the board.
Lyndse Hokanson and Briana Kottler split time in net, each recording three
saves.
UNCW opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest
as Lindsey Byrne took the throw-in for the Seahawks on the far side. Byrne's
throw landed by Stephanie Rose at the far corner of the box as Rose took three
steps and sailed a shot from 20-yards out into the low right corner of the net
for a 1-0 Seahawks lead.
Kallenberger looked to put Mason on the board in the 9th
minute with a shot from the near post, but Hunter was at the corner to make the
save. Kelly Pizzingrilli carried the
ball up the middle of the field and took a direct shot from 30-yards out, but
the shot went into the hands of Hunter in the 24th minute.
The Seahawks saw a chance to extend their lead in the 30th
minute when Hokanson saved a Katrina Guillou low shot into the left corner. On the
rebound, Stephanie Bronson tried to find the net, but a pair of Mason defenders
blocked the shot.
In the 33rd minute, UNCW took a 2-0 lead when
Bronson completed a combination play from Guillou and Rose. The Seahawks held
an 8-3 shots advantage at the end of the first and placed five shots on goal to
Mason's three.
In the second half, Jazmin Cardoso tried to cut the score in
half blasting a free kick from midfield to the upper right corner of the net,
but Hunter made the jump to make the stop in the 54th minute. A header
from Lowry in the 64th minute nearly missed the back corner of the net as
Hunter dove to her right to punch out the attempt.
UNCW took a 3-0 lead when Rose carried the ball up the near
side, placed the ball in the middle of the box as Guillou was in position to
kick it in behind Kottler for the tally. Just over two minutes later, Rose gave
the Seahawks a 4-0 advantage with her second goal of the afternoon scoring off
her own rebound. In the 71st minute, Kottler saved a Rose's first shot,
but on the rebound, Rose recollected the ball and carried it around Kottler to
score.
Cardoso took a solid chance in the 87th minute,
but the shot hit the near post and bounced back into play as the teams closed
out the contest.
Mason returns to the pitch and close out the 2012 regular
season welcoming Towson to George Mason Stadium on Wednesday, October 24 for a
7 p.m. contest.
