FAIRFAX, Va. - Using two goals scored within the first 10
minutes of play, the George Mason women's soccer team defeated visiting Georgia
State Friday evening. Liz Hodges and Nicole Clark tallied Mason's goal as the Patriots
improved to 6-10-1 overall and 2-5-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play,
while the Panthers dropped to 4-10-1, 1-7.
Mason wasted less than 20 seconds before opening the scoring
in the game as Hodges registered her sixth goal of the season at the 44:42
mark. Hodges, on the far side, collected the ball from Kelly Pizzingrilli as
the sophomore blasted a shot from 35-yards out into the top left corner of the
net to give Mason a 1-0 lead.
Just under eight minutes later, Mason doubled its lead off
an Amanda Stephenson corner kick. Stephenson took the corner on the far side
and delivered the kick into the middle of the net where Tiana Kallenberger put
a head on it, flicking it to Clark who punched it into the bottom left corner
for a 2-0 Patriot lead. It marked Clark's first goal of the season.
Georgia State cut the score in half when Ashley Nagy
dribbled in a kick off an Alison Gonzalez assist in the 29th minute
for a 2-1 score. Mason outshot GSU 6-1 after the opening 45 minutes as Rebecca
Toler made two stops in net for the Panthers. The Patriots also led 5-0 in
corner kicks.
Mason put two shots on frame in the second half and outshot
the Panthers, 4-1. Lyndse Hokanson made her first and only save of the evening
in the 56th minute when Whitney Ravan forced the Patriot to scoop up
the attempt. Emily Harvey saw a solid scoring opportunity blasting a shot into
the hands of Toler in the 85th minute. Mason finished the period
with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks for an 11-1 edge in the contest.
For the game, Mason held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal
led by Clark and Harvey, each with two, and a 10-2 overall shots advantage.
Mason returns to the pitch on Senior Day this
Sunday welcoming UNCW for a 1 p.m. matinee.
