ARLINGTON,
Va. - The George Mason men's basketball team has been picked to finish third
in the Colonial Athletic Association, as the results of the preseason poll were
announced Tuesday at CAA Basketball Media Day. Additionally, junior guard
Sherrod Wright was selected to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team. The vote was
taken by the league's head coaches, media relations directors and members of
the media.
Drexel was picked to capture the league's title, while Delaware was
selected in the second spot. Following the Patriots in the voting was Old
Dominion, Northeastern, James Madison and Hofstra. Rounding out the poll was
Georgia State, William & Mary, Towson and UNCW.
Two starters and several key reserves are back at Mason, which is
coming off a 24-9 campaign a year ago. The Patriots' top returnee is Wright,
who contributed 9.6 ppg as the team's sixth man. Joining him in the backcourt
are junior point guard Bryon Allen (7.5 ppg) and three-point shooting threat
Vertrail Vaughns (8.8 ppg). Junior Jonathan Arledge (4.3 ppg) and sophomore
Erik Copes (3.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg) are expected to challenge for starting roles while
junior Johnny Williams, who missed last season due to injury, returns after a
redshirt season.
The Patriots welcome four newcomers in freshman guard Patrick Holloway
(Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) and forwards
Marko Gujanicic (Cacak, Serbia/Stoneridge Prep [Calif.]), Jalen Jenkins
(Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) and Michael Rudy (Falls Church, Va./St. Thomas
More). Additionally, sophomore Anali Okoloji will make his on-court debut with
the Green and Gold after transferring from Seton Hall and redshirting the
2011-12 season.
Drexel's Frantz Massenat was voted as the CAA Preseason Player of the
Year. He is joined on the preseason All-CAA first team by Delaware's JamelleHagins
and Devon Saddler, Drexel's Damion Lee, Northeastern's Jonathan Lee and UNCW
senior forward Keith Rendleman, who contributed 15.3 ppg and 10.0 rpg last
season to earn first-team All-CAA accolades.
Voted to the preseason second team along with Wright were
Northeastern's Quincy Ford, James Madison senior guard A.J. Davis (15.9 ppg),
William & Mary sophomore guard Marcus Thornton (11.1 ppg) and Georgia State
junior guard Devonta White (12.9 ppg).
