FAIRFAX, Va. - Behind a pair of second half goals from Paul Andrews
and Taylor Morgan, the George Mason men's soccer team blanked visiting William
and Mary, 2-0, Saturday night at George Mason Stadium. Scoring his first goal of
the season in game-winning fashion, Andrews helped Mason improve to 9-4 overall
this season and 2-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the win. The
Tribe dipped to 2-9-3, 0-4-2 with the loss.
In a back-and-forth first half, neither team was able to
gain a solid rhythm throughout. Morgan tried to put Mason up in the 19th
minute looking to complete a Brice Colcombe cross from the far side. Morgan
headed the attempt, but the shot went high for Mason's lone solid scoring
opportunity in the period. At the end of the first 45 minutes, shots stood at
two apiece, as did corner kicks.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Mason's Ghiles
Harmouche took Mason's third corner of the game as the kick was knocked out by
a Tribe defender. On the second corner that followed, Harmouche placed the kick
at the near corner post as Andrews jumped to head the ball over the keeper's
head and put Mason up 1-0.
Wesley Sever almost doubled Mason's advantage in the 67th
minute when the junior collected a service from Morgan on the outside. Standing
20-yards out on the far side, Sever blasted a shot that hit the crossbar and
bounced back into play.
Dustin Butcher kept William and Mary off the board in the 77th
minute making two consecutive saves, proving to be the only stops Butcher would
need on the evening. The Tribe's Ben Anderson forced Butcher to his left on a
shot from the far side and on the rebound, Butcher saved an Andrew Hinnant
attempt.
Morgan gave Mason an insurance goal in the 86th minute
with his ninth tally of the season as the senior headed in a ball from Benjamin
Paris into the top left corner of the net. From the middle, Julio Arjona played
the ball out to Paris on the far side who then delivered the ball to Morgan at
the near post to complete the play.
Mason held a 9-4 advantage in shots over William & Mary
at the end of the contest, including a 5-2 shots on goal edge. The Patriots
also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Morgan led Mason with three shots,
putting two on frame, while Butcher played the full 90 in net, making two saves
to earn the win. Tribe goalkeeper Alex Harrington made three stops.
Mason returns to the pitch traveling to Towson
on Wednesday, October 17 for a 3 p.m. contest.
