The George Mason Track team opened its 2012 indoor season at home on Saturday, hosting the Father Diamond Invitational.
On the day, the women qualified one relay for the ECAC Indoor Championships, while the men had two individual and one relay record qualifying marks for the IC4A Indoor Championships.
For the women, the 4x400 'A' relay of Daianna Barron, Aneesha Scott, Taylor Wheaton and Cierra McGee finished in third place with an ECAC qualifying time of 3:49.76. In the other relay of the day, the team of Barron, Wheaton, McGee and Kristin Bethel finished the 4x800 in second place with a time of 9:32.14.
Individually, Heather Selheimer was the top finisher in the 1000m run (3:02.17), while teammate Victoria Samyn finished in second place (3:04.81). In the 60m dash, Scott missed recording an ECAC qualifying time by .02 as she crossed the finish line in the event with a time of 7.70.
In the field events, Grace Mavugara recorded a third-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.44m.
On the men's side, Parker Boudreau recorded an IC4A qualifying time of 4.11.56 while capturing the event. He also finished third in the 800m run (1:55.78). The other individual qualifier was Lavell Handy, who recorded a time of 8.07 in the 60m hurdles, good for second place.
The 4x800 'A' relay joined the men's individual qualifiers, as the quartet of David Klimek, George Empty, Tyler Golden and Alex Zyryanov recorded a time of 7:50.50 and a first-place finish. Also in the 4x800 relay, the 'B' squad of Alex Levine, Andrew McGreal, Robert Reynolds and Everett Hackett took the second spot in a time of 7:55.61, just narrowly missing an IC4A qualifying mark.
The other highlight for the Patriots was a sweep of the top three spots in the 3000m run, with finishes by Hackett (8:43.63), Reynolds (8:43.93) and Zyryanov (8:46.21).
In the field events, Patrick Dietrick won the pole vault with a height of 4.65m, and was followed by teammates Zachary Lawson and Josh Trikakis who tied for third place (4.50m), while Gustavo Osorio finished in fifth place (4.20m).
Dwight Webley finished second in the triple jump (14.95m), while Handy was third in the long jump (7.30m) and Michael Foley took third in the weight throw (14.53m).
Mason will compete again on January 20-21 as they travel to Blacksburg to take part in the Virginia Tech Invitational.
