Men's Volleyball Takes to the Court for Matches Against Two Ranked Opponents

The George Mason men's volleyball team continues its series of matches away from the RAC as it travels to face No. 14 Loyola-Chicago and No. 7 Lewis this weekend. The Patriots are in the midst of an eight-match road trip, and have thus far posted a record of 2-1. Last weekend, the team fell at No. 10 Ohio State (3-2) before defeating both Ball State (3-2) and IPFW (3-2).

MASON (3-2) at No. 14 LOYOLA-CHICAGO (3-5)

The Patriots will look to top the Ramblers on Friday evening, a team they have not defeated since the 2008 season in a 3-2 triumph at the Fieldhouse. The Ramblers are 3-5 overall, most recently dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 8 Penn State. This season, Loyola is led by redshirt sophomore opposite hitter Joseph Smalzer who has 98 kills and 18 service aces. Junior setter Matt Mirick has a team-high 295 assists, while redshirt junior middle blocker Eric Dalige leads the team with 25 blocks.

Mason and Lewis will face each other for the first time this season on Saturday evening in Romeoville. The two teams split the season series last year, with each team winning on its home court. The Flyers are 4-2 this season, and are currently on a three-match winning streak after recording wins over No. 13 Hawaii (3-2), Springfield (3-0) and No. 8 Penn State (3-1). Averaging 3.55 kills/set, redshirt junior outside hitter Jay Petty leads LU, while setup man redshirt sophomore setter BJ Boldog is averaging 9.50 assists/set. Defensively, redshirt senior middle blocker Aaron Flick leads the team with 22 blocks, and redshirt sophomore libero Roberto Torres-Davis and junior opposite hitter Ian Karbiener has a team-high 30 digs apiece.

Also, the match has been designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Night, with one dollar from every ticket sold donated to ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer.
