RICHMOND, Va. - George Mason junior Taylor Morgan and
freshman Verneri Valimaa helped lead the men's soccer team to the D.C. College
Cup Title after a 2-0 weekend, and were honored by the Colonial Athletic
Association Monday afternoon by being named Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of
the Week, respectively.
Morgan contributed three goals, including the game-winner in
both contests, and three assists in the two matches. The junior forward posted
two goals and two assists in a 9-0 shutout of Howard to open the tournament and
added a goal and an assist in Mason's 3-0 triumph over American. The
Southampton, England, native was named the Tournament MVP for his performance.
Morgan was named Co-Player of the Week along with Old
Dominion's Yannick Smith.
Valimaa tallied a goal and four assists over the weekend for
the Patriots and was named to the All-Tournament team with Morgan. The
freshman midfielder had a team-high three assists, along with Brennan Zizi, in
Mason's 9-0 victory over Howard and scored his first collegiate goal in a 3-0
win over American. Against the Eagles, Valimaa also dished out an assist. The Coral
Springs, Fla., native took 12 shots in the two games and put nine on net.
"It was a good weekend for the team with two very solid performances," stated head coach Greg Andrulis.
"Although we scored some terrific goals, our collective team defending
was outstanding. We did a great job limiting our opponents' goal scoring
chances, while being able to create numerous chances for ourselves.
"A big part of the offensive production went through Taylor Morgan and Verneri Valimaa,"
noted Andrulis. "Their partnership is beginning to come together and
with more games together, the cohesiveness required should improve."
Mason returns to action at the Brown Tournament, September
9-11. The Patriots open the tournament facing host Brown on Friday, Sept. 9 at
7 p.m. and conclude the two-day tournament against Holy Cross on Sunday, Sept.
11 at noon.
