RICHMOND, Va. - The George Mason women's soccer team battled
to a 0-0 double overtime tie at VCU Thursday night to continue Colonial
Athletic Association play. With the draw at Sports Backers Stadium, Mason moves
to 3-4-4 on the season and 0-1-2 in league play, while VCU stands at 2-7-2,
0-2-1.
Mason's back line kept the Patriots in the contest all night
as the Rams outshot the visiting squad 23-5. Tiana Kallenberger led the Patriots
with two shots, while Zoe Doherty, Kelly Pizzingrilli and Nicole Clark each
tallied a shot. Sophomore Lyndse Hokanson played an outstanding game in net and
recorded seven saves to keep the Rams off the scoreboard.
"We played a very hard-fought match with a lot of heart
tonight," stated head coach Diane Drake. "Our focus recently has been limiting
opponent goals and the back line tonight, despite preseason All-CAA defender
Kelly Thomas sidelined due to injury, played a solid game. Lyndse Hokanson also
played a tremendous game in the net."
For the Rams, Courtney Conrad tallied a team-high eight shots, while goalkeeper Kristin Carden picked up two saves in the contest. VCU
fired off 10 corner kicks to Mason's three.
The Patriots and Rams opened the match each taking three
shots in the first half. Mason threatened in the 18th minute when Clark
forced VCU goalkeeper Carden into her first save. Just over two minutes later,
Hokanson made her first stop on a Maren Johansen attempt. Gabby Wilson and Bex
Kunz both put shots on frame in the second half, but Hokanson was in position
to collect the saves. Meanwhile, Mason saw a scoring opportunity in the 83rd
minute on a Kallenberger shot on goal stopped by Carden. VCU outshot Mason 14-2
in the second stanza, putting two attempts on frame, but could not find the
back of the net as the teams played through regulation scoreless.
Hokanson came up
strong for the Patriots in overtime, collecting four saves, including three in
the second overtime period to keep the Rams off the scoreboard for the final
score.
"We will regroup and prepare for Sunday's match against
James Madison," commented Drake. "Our focus for the final eight games will be to
take one game at a time."
Mason returns to George Mason Stadium to open a three-game
homestand next. The Patriots welcome James Madison Sunday, October 2 for a 2
p.m. matchup to open the slate.
