FAIRFAX, Va. - Four former athletes will be inducted into
the George Mason Men's Soccer Hall of Fame as announced by head coach Greg
Andrulis. The induction ceremony will take place during halftime of the Old
Dominion match on Saturday, September 24 at 7 p.m.
Among the inductees are Mark Ryan (1994-97), Greg Franzke
(1989-92), Bob Lilley (1984-87) and Mike Garrett (1979-81).
Mark Ryan (1994-97) Mark
Ryan was a four-year starter for Mason and served as team captain from 1995-97.
He was a member of the 1996 NCAA Tournament team that defeated Virginia 1-0 in
the opening round. A three-time All-Virginia Second Team member (1995-97), Ryan
was also a 1997 All-CAA Second Team honoree.
Greg Franzke
(1989-92) Greg Franzke was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams (1989 and
1990) after helping lead the Patriots to a 1989 CAA Championship. A four-year
starter, Franzke was a 1992 All-Virginia selection in addition to being named
All-CAA First Team his final two seasons. Franzke started all 80 games he
appeared in and ties for seventh on the all-time career list for games played. Prior
to his collegiate career, Franzke was a 1989 High School Parade All-American
recipient. Franzke returned to Mason from 1997-2000 as a men's soccer assistant
coach.
Bob Lilley (1984-87) A
four-year starter and team captain for the Patriots, Bob Lilley helped lead
Mason to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He currently ranks
second in the Mason men's soccer program record book in career games played
with 82. Following his collegiate career, Lilley went into the coaching realm
and has coached the Vancouver Whitecaps, Montreal Impact, Hershey and Detroit
Ignition. He was twice named the A-League Coach of the Year in 1997 and 2003
before earning the MISL Coach of the Year honor in 2008. In 2010, Lilley was
named the USSF Division II Coach of the Year. Lilley is a current member of the
United Soccer League Hall of Fame.
Mike Garrett
(1979-81) Mike Garrett was a key player for the Patriots for three seasons
before being drafted as the number one pick by the Memphis Americans of the
Major Indoor Soccer League in 1981. A team captain, Garrett helped lead Mason
to an ECAC-South Championship game in 1980. He was named the Capitol Collegiate
Conference Player of the Year and All-Capitol Collegiate Conference in 1980. Following
his collegiate career, Lilley played professionally for seven years in the
original Major Indoor Soccer League. Over the course of his professional
career, Garrett spent time with the Memphis Americans (1981-83), Buffalo Storm
(1984), Kalamazoo Kangaroos (1987-88) and Toledo Pride.
