FAIRFAX, Va. - Liz Hodges and Tiana Kallenberger both scored
second-half goals as the George Mason women's soccer team rolled to a 2-0
victory over Howard Friday night at George Mason Stadium.
The Patriots outshot the Bison 21-4 en route to winning
their second consecutive match. Zoe Doherty led the Patriots with six shots,
while Owyn Mason led Howard with two. Goalkeepers Alex Bodenschatz and Lyndse
Hokanson split time in the net with Bodenschatz recording two saves.
Mason (2-3-2) controlled possession and played a strong
defensive game in the first half, limiting the Bison to two shots, both on frame,
while taking nine. Howard (1-6-1) forced Bodenschatz into two saves early in
the half with the first coming off the foot of Cynthia Snyder from the left
side. Bodenschatz scooped up the save six minutes before collecting her second
save of the half. On a free kick for Howard, Selena Mason sent the ball to the
left side of the penalty box as Owyn Mason headed it to the left corner into
the hands of Bodenschatz.
The Patriots put their first shot on goal in the 22nd
minute as Kelly Thomas received a Paige Babel free kick in the middle of the
box. Thomas blasted a shot from 20-yards out, but Dickinson was in position for
the save. Kallenberger put Mason's second shot on goal in the 35th
minute from 18-yards out.
Mason produced another pair of scoring opportunities to
close the first half. In the 35th minute, Doherty sent a shot that
looked to sail into the upper left corner, but hit the post high. Three minutes
later, Alyssa Andersen delivered a cross pass out to Nicole Clark on the far
side as the sophomore headed it just high to close the half in a 0-0 tie.
The Patriots continued to attack to start the second half as
Kallenberger forced Howard goalkeeper Kyra Dickinson into a save just five
minutes into the period. Mason had an opportunity to take the lead in the 67th
minute when the Patriots were awarded a penalty kick. Doherty took the PK,
sending the attempt two feet wide on the left.
After another pair of scoring opportunities, the Patriots
were able to find the back of the net in the 77th minute for the
game-winner. Taking a corner kick for Mason, Casey Vornadore slipped the corner
out, Howard bumped it back to the Patriot and Vornadore sent a pass to Hodges in
the middle who headed it in for the 1-0 Mason lead.
Mason doubled its lead and set the final 2-0 score on
Kallenberger's third goal of the season. Waiting on the left side, Kallenberger
completed a play from Doherty, sending the shot into the corner from
three-yards out in the 82nd minute.
