UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Jazmin Cardoso tied the score at
1-all with a goal in the 86th minute of regulation pushing the
George Mason women's soccer team into overtime against Richmond in the opening
match of the Penn State Invitational Friday afternoon. The Patriots and Spiders
played through two scoreless overtime periods for a 1-1 draw at Jeffrey Field.
Richmond held a narrow advantage in shots, 19-15, as both
teams produced seven shots on goal and six saves. Mary Kate Lowry led the Patriots
with two shots on goal, while Natalie LeClair and Becca Wann each produced two
apiece for the Spiders. Mason held a 7-6 corner kick advantage.
Richmond took an early 1-0 lead in the first half when Liza
Koch and Wann were credited with a double-assist on a LeClair goal in the 12th
minute. Wann delivered a cross pass from the right of the net as Hokanson
attempted to intercept it, but Koch's header on the pass fell at LeClair's feet
as the junior punched it in from 12 yards out for the first goal. The Spiders
carried the 1-0 lead into halftime holding the Patriots to a shot and corner
kick the remainder of the period.
A Nicole Peters header from in the box marked Richmond's
only save in the first half by goalkeeper Andrea Young. Meanwhile, for the Patriots, Lyndse Hokanson
played the first 19 minutes of the half in the net, recording two saves, while
Alex Bodenschatz closed the period, also with two saves (six total).
The Patriots threatened early in the second half on a
scramble by Nicole Clark and Lowry. Richmond goalkeeper, Andrea Young,
deflected two shots from the pair of Patriots as Clark and Lowry drilled
back-to-back attempts on the right side of the box. Clark's deflections bounced
to the left as Lowry was in position for the second shot, but Young was in
front to pick up the saves.
Neither team produced a threat over the next 26 minutes
until Cardoso carried a dribble to the 20-yard mark and sailed a shot over the
goalkeeper's head as it fell just below the crossbar to even the score at 1-all
in the 86th minute. Richmond was unable to convert any of its final
three shots of regulation before the contest entered into overtime.
After a cautious first overtime period by both teams,
Richmond's Ashley Williams posed a threat on a shot from in the box early in
the second overtime period resulting in a save by Bodenschatz. The Patriots
responded with a shot on goal from Alyssa Andersen from the far left wing 20 seconds
later as the final attempt in the match.
George Mason closes the Penn State Invitational on Sunday,
August 28 facing No. 17 West Virginia at noon.
