CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Playing its lone exhibition match of
the season, the George Mason women's soccer team held No. 10 Virginia scoreless
in the second half, but the Cavaliers used a five goal first-half advantage to
take the win Monday morning, 5-0. The match was delayed from Sunday night due
to inclement weather in the area.
Virginia outscored and outshot Mason in the first half, but
following intermission, the Patriots regrouped and held the Cavaliers to five
shots and no goals in the second half at Klöckner Stadium.
"It was a valuable match to see where we are against a
top-10 opponent," commented head coach Diane Drake on the match. "We got much
stronger in the second half while working out some kinks. Technically, we need
to be cleaner and compete at a greater speed of play. Overall, this is why we
have exhibition matches, to see what we are all about."
UVa finished with 24 shots, while Mason posted two. The
Cavaliers also held the advantage on corner kicks, 10-to-1.
Jazmin Cardoso recorded both of the Patriots' shots in the
contest, both in the second half. Goalkeepers Alex Bodenschatz and Lyndse Hokanson split the time in the contest and combined for seven saves. Bodenschatz
got the start and recorded four saves, while Hokanson closed the contest
allowing no goals on three saves. Five different Cavaliers scored for the home
squad in the first half to account for their offense.
The Patriots open regular season play welcoming St. John's
to George Mason Stadium on Sunday, August 21 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
