FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason men's soccer head coach Greg Andrulis announced
the addition of two student-athletes to the 2011 squad. Joining the program will
be freshman Leo Stolz and transfer Richard Diaz.
"The 2011 class has many different components and is
certainly one of our more intriguing classes," commented Andrulis. "Assistant coach
and recruiting coordinator Nick Carlin-Voigt and assistant coach
John O'Hara are to be commended for their tireless efforts in
putting together this outstanding group of young men."
Mason's class is highlighted by two US Youth National team
players, two current college All-American transfers, two NCAA National
Championship winners and the top international recruit coming out of Germany
this year. The past three George Mason recruiting classes have all been ranked
in the top-35 in the country and the George Mason coaching staff feels that
this class could be one of the deepest and most talented classes yet.
Stolz, a midfielder, played seven years with 1860 Munich as
a central midfielder and is currently a member of Regionalliga Sued. In his
career, Stolz has been a member of the extended U18 German national team, as
well as a member of the All-Star State Team. He helped lead the state team to
indoor championships three consecutive years from 2008-2010.
Joining the program with Stolz is Akron transfer Diaz, a redshirt-freshman
forward hailing from Chesapeake, Va. Diaz attended Oscar Frommel Smith High School
and played for Virginia Rush of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. He was the 89th-ranked recruit
according to Top Drawer Soccer coming
out of high school and was selected to participate in the Region I Olympic
Development Program (ODP). A four-time first-team all-district selection, Diaz
was also named the 2007 South Eastern District Rookie of the Year. He enters
the 2011 season with four years of athletic eligibility remaining having
redshirted his freshman year at Akron.
The Patriots will begin preseason camp on Friday, August 12
and open regular season play at Boston College on Aug. 26 before playing host
to the D.C. College Cup at George Mason Stadium, September 1-3.
