The George Mason baseball team honored its seniors
pregame on Sunday but the Patriots were unable to finish off their home
schedule with a victory as Northeastern used four home runs to power past
Mason, 11-4 on Sunday.
Brig Tison
paced Mason with a 3 for 4 afternoon
while senior Shane Davis
was 2 for 4. Northeastern's Ricky Salvucci was 4 for 5
with three runs scored while Matt Miller was 3 for 3 with three RBI and Aaron Barbosa
was 2 for 6 with three RBI. Northeastern entered the game with just eight
homers on the year.
The Huskies (15-28, 9-15 CAA) got on the board in
the third when Alan Pastyrnak Jr. reached on an error and Matt Miller followed
with his first home run of the season, a blast to right that made it 2-0. They
added to that lead in the fourth with another long ball. This time John
Puttress and Ricky Salvucci hit one-out singles and with two outs, Aaron
Barbosa hit his first home run of the season, a ball that just barely cleared
the wall in the rightfield corner to make it 5-0.
Mason (20-30-1, 6-21 CAA) answered in the bottom of
the fourth. Brig Tison
singled and scored with one out on a Blaise Fernandez
double. Fernandez came home on Shane Davis
' triple and Davis crossed the plate
on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
It didn't stay a two-run game for long. Miller was
hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Jon Leroux followed with his third
homer of the year to make it 7-3. Connor Lyons tripled on a full-count pitch
and Oliver Hart drew a full-count walk before Puttress grounded into a double
play bringing home Lyons. Salvucci followed with a solo homer to right to end starter
Ryan Pfaeffle
's day and make it 9-3. Reliever Sean Cabrera
came on and he gave
up a single to Sean Lyons who stole second and scored on a Tison error at short
to push it to a seven-run lead.
Mason put a run on the board in the sixth without a
hit as Fernandez and Helgeson drew walks, moved up on a wild pitch and
Fernandez came home on an Allen RBI ground out. In the seventh, with two outs
and the bases empty, Mason reliever Brandon Kuter
gave up an infield single to
Barbosa and after Pastyrnak walked, Miller singled to make it 11-4.
Northeastern's final run scored in the ninth when Salvucci led off with a
double, Sean Lyons followed with a single and Salvucci scored on Barbosa's
double-play ball. The game's final run came in the bottom of the ninth as Danny
Lyons singled to lead off the inning in his final at bat in front of the home
crowd. Jake Kalish
pinch ran and after a walk by Jeremy Haas
in a 10-pitch
at-bat, Chris Cook
and Tison had back-to-back ground outs to make it 12-5.
The Patriots return to action on Thursday, May 19
