The George Mason baseball team pounded out a season-high in runs and hits as the Patriots put together a 10-run fifth-inning and cruised to a 23-3 home win over Coppin State on Wednesday afternoon. For the Patriots, who had 23 hits in the game, it was their 15th home win of the season, making it the 20th time in Spuhler Field's 24 years that the Patriots have won at least 15 games at home.

Brig Tison extended his school-record hitting streak to 27-straight when he went 3 for 7. Chris Cook , Blaise Fernandez , Shane Davis and Nick Allen each had three hits as well while Jake Kalish and Mick Foley each came off the bench to have two hits. Mason improved to 23-0 all-time against Coppin State.

The scoring started in the second when Fernandez doubled and Davis tripled to make it 1-0. Davis scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. The Eagles trimmed it to a one-run lead in the third when Craig Richmond walked, stole second, went to third on a John Bergwall single and scored on a Derek Richards sacrifice fly. The Patriots added another two runs in the fourth when Zack Helgeson walked, Allen singled, Jake Leonardo was hit by a pitch and Jordan Hill hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. The fourth run came home on a Chris Cook single to center. Coppin State again put a run on the board, this time in the fifth, when Jim Vagnier singled, stole second, and scored on a Richmond base hit.

In the fifth, Mason sent 15 batters to the plate. Dan Schafferman walked to lead off the inning and Fernandez followed with a single to left. Davis had an RBI single and Helgeson followed with his 15th home run of the season to make it 8-2. Allen followed with a walk and after Leonardo flew out to left, Hill was hit by a pitch and the runners advanced on wild pitches. Cook's double to right made it 10-2 and Tison followed with an RBI single. Schafferman walked for the second time in the inning and Fernandez singled to make it 12-2. After Davis reached on a fielder's choice with Fernandez out at second, Foley followed with a two-run double to cap the scoring in the inning.

The Patriots (19-28-1) added a run in the sixth when the Patriots used a walk and an error to bring home an unearned run on a Kalish fielder's choice. Coppin State (5-36) made it 15-3 with a run in the seventh when Richmond doubled and Derek Richards doubled. But Mason responded with five in the seventh and three in the eighth.

The five-run seventh began when Davis singled, Foley singled and Allen singled to make it 16-3. After a Leonardo walk, Hill had his second bases-loaded sacrifice fly of the game. Ahead 17-3, Jeremy Haas walked, Tison singled to make it 18-3, Kalish singled to make it 19-3 and Haas scored on a Danny Lyons ' grounder to make it 20-3. In the eighth, Allen singled, went to second on a ground out, took third on another ground out, and scored on a Haas single. Tison doubled to put runners on second and third, and a wild pitch made it 22-3. The final run scored on a Kalish single to right.

The Patriots return to action on Friday when they open a three-game series with Northeastern. First pitch at Spuhler Field is slated for 3 p.m.
