The
George Mason men's and women's track and field teams qualified 15 student-athletes
in 12 different events for the NCAA East Regional as the field was announced on
Thursday afternoon. The Patriots will have 17 different entries in the regional
which will be at Bloomington, Ind. from May26-28.
Rachaunn
Ruffin, Dwight Webley and Lavell Handy each qualified in two events as
individuals while Ruffin also will run as part of a relay. Nick Vaughn
qualified as an individual in one event and will run a pair of relays while
Kevin Wilson qualified as an individual and in a relay. Adrian Vaughn qualified
in two relays.
Ruffin
qualified in both the 100 meters and 200 meters with times of 10.32 seconds and
21.14 seconds. He was 20th and 35th, respectively, in the
two events. The NCAA took the top 48 in the individual events and top 24 in the
relays. Lavell Handy and Dwight Webley each qualified in the triple jump and
long jump. Handy qualified fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 16.25 meters
and 22nd in the long jump, with a mark of 7.58 meters. Webley was 34th
in each event, with distances of 15.30 meters in the triple jump and 7.48
meters in the long jump.
Mason
qualified three individuals in the 400 meters - David Verburg (11th,
46.09 seconds), Nick Vaughn (28th, 46.93) and Kevin Wilson (32nd,
47.09). Tyler Golden qualified 16th in the 800 meters with a time of
1:49.14 while Parker Boudreau was 41st in the 1500 meters with a
time of 3:47.02. The 4X100-meter relay team of Adrian Vaughn, Ruffin, Travaughn
Baker-Johnson and Nick Vaughn qualified 20th with a time of 40.21
while the 4X400-meter relay team of Nick Vaughn, Ja-Vell Bullard, Kevin Wilson
and George Empty qualified fourth with a time of 3:04.77. Qualifying for the 200 meters due to a medical scratch higher up on the list was Adrian Vaughn.
The
other three qualifiers were all on the women's team. Taylor Wheaton qualified
27th for the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.99 seconds,
Mandissa Marshall qualified 24th in the pole vault with a mark of
4.00 meters, and Grace Mavuagara qualified 40th in the triple jump
with a distance 12.50 meters.
The
Mason track teams will be idle next weekend but will return to action in two
weeks as athletes who have qualified for the NCAA East Regional will compete in
Bloomington, Ind.
