The
George Mason men's and women's track and field teams completed competition at
the IC4A and ECAC Championships on Sunday afternoon and the men posted a
second-place finish as the Patriots finished as runners-up to Duke, posting 61
points to the Blue Devils' 74.5. The women finished 22nd as Duke
swept both the IC4A and ECAC titles.
Lavell
Handy and David Verburg won individual titles on Sunday as Handy posted the
fifth-best triple jump mark in school history while Verburg ran the
ninth-fastest 400 meters in school history. Handy's mark of 16.25 meters
(53-feet, 3.75 inches) was more than half a meter better than runner-up Nasim
Siddeq of Albany. Mason's Dwight Webley finished fourth in the event with a
mark of 15.30 meters. Verburg's time of 46.09 was half a second better than
runner-up Leslie Murray of Delaware State. Mason's Kevin Wilson was third with
a time of 47.09 seconds.
Also
posting one of the best times in school history was the men's 4X400-meter relay
team which was second with a time of 3:04.77, ninth-fastest in school history.
Also with a second-place finish was the 4X100-meter relay team which ran a time
of 40.35 seconds. Also scoring points for the men was Adrian Vaughn, who was
fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.30 seconds, and the 4X800-meter
relay team, which was sixth in a time of 7:28.08.
The
women got points on Saturday from two individuals and one relay team. Daianna
Barron was third in the 400 meters with a time of 54.75 seconds, Crystal Clark
was seventh in the 100 meters with a time of 12.33 seconds, and the 4X400-meter
relay team was seventh with a time of 3:48.90.
The
Mason track teams will be idle next weekend but will return to action in two
weeks as athletes who have qualified for the NCAA East Regional will compete in
Bloomington, Ind.
