Brig Tison
set a new school record on Alumni Day as
the junior hit safely in his 26th
-straight game but the Patriots
fell to Towson, 12-5 on Sunday. Tison, a second-team All-CAA performer last
season, has had a hit in every contest beginning with the March 22 game at
Georgetown, and as a result, he broke Eddie Jordan's record of 25-straight, set
in 2000.
Tison's single came in the bottom of the seventh
inning, his final at-bat of the game, when he singled through the left side of
the infield. At the time, the Patriots trailed by two and that brought the
tying run to the plate. For Tison, it was his 80th
hit of the
season. He entered the week leading the nation in hits and looks to be at or
near the top of the list when it comes out early next week. It was the third
time during his hitting streak he extended it in his final at-bat.
Chris Cook
, Zack Helgeson
and Dan Schafferman
all
homered for the Patriots (18-28-1, 5-19 CAA) but the Tigers (20-21-1, 11-10
CAA) scored five runs in the final two innings to break open a 7-5 game.
Dominic Fratantuono was 2 for 3 with three RBI for Towson while Brandon Gonnella,
Ben Winter, Chris Wychock, Andrew Parker and Nick Natoli all had multiple hits.
In the second, Towson took a 1-0 lead when Steve
Rice singled and Wychock doubled to bring him home. Helgeson hit a two-out solo
homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. In the third, Fratantuono
singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, took third on a deep fly ball and
scored on a single by Parker. The lead grew to five runs in the fourth when Rice
walked, Winter hit a one-out single to put runners on the corners and Gonnella
singled to make it 3-1. Fratantuono added a three-run homer to make it 6-1.
In the fourth, Schafferman hit a one-out solo homer
and with two outs, Shane Davis
singled and he scored on a Helgeson double to
make it 6-3. In the top of the seventh, Towson used a lead-off double by
Natoli, a sacrifice bunt and a single by Austin Harclerode to make it a
four-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Nick Allen
singled and with two
outs, Cook homered to trim it to two.
In the eighth, Wychock walked, Winter singled, and
Fratantuono walked to load the bases. A single by Natoli made it 8-5, but
Winter was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Pat Fitzgerald followed
with a single that brought home two runs to make it 10-5. In the ninth, Wychock
doubled and scored on a Gonnella triple. Gonnella came home on a Natoli
sacrifice fly.
The Patriots return to action on Wednesday when they
host Coppin State at 3 p.m.
