The George Mason baseball
team was unable to win its series with Old Dominion on Sunday afternoon as the
Patriots lost the rubber match to the Monarchs, falling 10-3 in Norfolk, Va.
Despite the loss, Brig Tison
was able to extend his hitting streak to
21-straight, moving him into a tie for the third-longest in school history.
Tison was 1 for 4 while
Jeremy Haas
was 2 for 4. Old Dominion was led by Brent Frazier, who was 4 for 4
with two RBI, and Kenny Stoneback, who was 2 for 3 with three RBI. Phil
McCarthy picked up a complete-game victory for ODU allowing eight hits and one
walk in nine innings of work.
Mason jumped out to an early
lead as the Patriots loaded the bases in the third on three straight hits by
Jordan Hill
, Tison and Dan Schafferman
. Blaise Fernandez
had a sacrifice fly to
make it 1-0 and Shane Davis
added an RBI fielder's choice to put the Patriots
up 2-0.
Old Dominion answered in the
fourth when Shawn Sizemore led off with a single, Edgar Hernandez walked with
two outs and Brandon Stahl singled to load the bases. Stoneback doubled to
clear the bases and give the Monarchs a 3-2 lead. Stoneback came home on a
Fernandez error at third on a Brandon Shelton grounder and Shelton scored for a
5-2 lead on a Frazier single to center.
Four more runs came home in
the sixth inning when ODU put the game away. The Monarchs got a lead-off single
by Stahl and Stoneback followed with a sacrifice bunt. Shelton walked and
Frazier followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Chris Baker had a
two-run single and with two outs, Joe Burney scored two runs on a single up the
middle to make it 9-2. Old Dominion's final run came home in the seventh when
Stoneback reached on a single, advanced to third on an error, and Frazier
singled him home. Mason added a run in the ninth when Zack Helgeson
led off
with a double and scored on a Haas double.
The Patriots will return to action on Tuesday
when they host Georgetown at 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field.
