Brig Tison
became just the
fifth Patriot in school history to have a hit in 20 consecutive games but that
was the lone bright spot on Saturday afternoon as the Patriots fell at Old
Dominion, 14-0 in Colonial Athletic Association action.
Tison wasted no time in
pushing his hitting streak to 20 straight as he singled up the middle in his
first at-bat of the game. With one out in the top of the first, he drove a ball
into centerfield to join Eddie Jordan, Greg Deares, Stephen Johnson and Chris
Burr as the lone Patriots to reach that mark. Jordan holds the school record at
25 straight, set in 2000. Deares held the record before him when he hit in 23
straight in 1993. Johnson hit in 21 straight in 2001 while Burr was the first
player in Division I school history to reach the 20-straight plateau when he
reached that number in 1992. Tison is the only player in school history to have
more than one hitting streak of 17-or-more as he put together a 17-game hitting
streak last year.
Tison, Mick Foley
and Jake
Kalish all had multiple hits for the Patriots. Joe Burney led ODU going 4 for 4
with two RBI and four runs scored. Chris Baker and Brandon Shelton each had
three hits and multiple RBI.
The Patriots (16-24-1, 4-16
CAA) had base runners on in eight of the nine innings but stranded 10 and hit
into two double plays. Ben Tomchick picked up the win for the Monarchs allowing
eight hits and two walks in eight innings while striking out seven. Erick Baker
pitched a scoreless ninth. The Patriots used four pitchers in the game and none
could keep ODU (20-20, 12-8 CAA) off the board as the Monarchs scored in six of
the eight innings in which they batted.
In the first, ODU used two
singles and a steal to take a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Monarchs put five on
the board as the inning began with a Burney single and Nate Hartman followed
with a home run. Then, with one out, Kenny Stoneback doubled, and with two
outs, Brent Frazier had an RBI single, Josh Wright singled and Baker had a
two-run double. In the third, a leadoff double by Burney and an RBI single by
Hartman chased Mason starter A.J. Johnson
and Michael Bowie
came on to retire
the side. He allowed a meaningless hit in the fourth but ran into trouble in
the fifth.
The Monarchs led off with
inning with a Burney single, Hartman walked, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners
up and Stoneback's sacrifice fly made it 8-0. Back-to-back RBI doubles ended
Bowie's outing. Branden Bartlett
came on and after giving up a run-scoring
double, he got a ground out. In the sixth, a Shawn Sizemore single was followed
by a Burney homer to make it 13-0. In the eighth, three singles pushed across a
final run for the Monarchs against reliever Sean Cabrera
.
The Patriots and Monarchs will conclude their
series on Sunday when they play at 2 p.m.
