Mason's golf team is in third place after round one of the 2011 CAA Golf Championships at The Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday afternoon with the winners earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.
The Patriots are eight strokes behind first place UNCW and six strokes back of James Madison after carding a 14-over par team score.
Mason's Silas VanSky is tied for first place overall with three other players after shooting even par. Chad Mozingo and Ryan Vince from James Madison and UNCW's Josh Brock share the lead with VanSky.
Other Patriots in the top 20 individually are Branson Real who is tied for 12 after a three-over par 75 and Josh Apple tied for 16th with a 76. Casey Thompson carded a 79 and Marshall Tinsley an 82 for the Patriots.
Eleven men's squads are competing at the par 72, 7,092-yard Pinehurst No. 8 Course. Towson is the defending CAA men's golf champion, after claiming their first CAA Men's Golf title in 2010 at The Homestead. The Tigers are lead by John Duthie, Nyasha Mauchaza and Johnny Hayes, IV.
Round two will be played on Saturday.
