FAIRFAX, Va. -
The
George Mason men's volleyball team gave No. 9 Ohio State a battle, but the
Buckeyes were able to overcome the threat and seal a 3-0 victory Saturday
night.

paced the Patriots (16-10) for the second
consecutive night posting 17 kills, three digs and one block assist. Brandon
Joyner collected a team-high six blocks, four assists and two solo, while
adding 35 assists. Shaun Sibley
followed Joyner with four block assists. Leading
the way for Ohio State (21-6) was John Klanac with 15 kills and two block
assists as Shawn Sangrey added 14 kills and seven digs.
In the first set, Ohio State climbed out to a 4-1 lead
before Mason brought it back to within one at 6-5. The Buckeyes used an 8-4 run
to grab a five-point lead at 14-9, but the Patriots staged a late rally and
knotted the score at 21-all on a Buckeye attack error. The teams worked through
two more tied deadlocks before Ohio State sealed a 25-23 first set win.
The second set witnessed a more furious battle between the
foes as Mason held four set points and OSU owned three before sealing the
extended set, 31-29, after 21 tied scores and eight lead changes. The Patriots kept
the set close through the early going and held its first set point at 25-24. OSU tied the score twice before holding its second
set point at 27-26. Mason regained two set points that were each fought off by
the Buckeyes who sealed the set win on two Mason attack errors.
Ohio State controlled the momentum in the third and final
set, taking a 25-16 victory. Mason drew the score to 10-9, but the Buckeyes
staged a 10-3 run for a 20-12 advantage. OSU closed out the set to seal the
match victory.
Mason plays host to NYU next on Saturday, April 23 at
7 p.m.
