The George Mason men's volleyball team played its
lone mid-week home match of the season on Wednesday night and the Patriots made
short work of visiting Mount Olive, beating the Trojans 25-15, 25-19, 25-20.
The Patriots snapped a three-match losing streak with the win to improve to
12-6 on the year. Mount Olive fell to 11-5.
Patrick Maloney
had 12 kills and just one error, hitting 61.1 percent in the
match. He also led the team with five digs. Eric Lucas
and Mark Jones
each had
seven kills while Charlie Swingle
had six kills to go with a .625 hitting
percentage. Benedikt Schirmers had 11 kills to lead Mount Olive.
The first game was tight early until Mason had one
of its best runs of the season. The Patriots rolled off seven straight points behind
Patrick Maloney
's serve to turn a 9-9 set into a 16-9 lead. From there the
Patriots were able to cruise to a first-set win, 25-15.
The second set was tight deeper into the game. The
Patriots trailed several times early, including 10-7, 11-8 and 17-15. But again
the Patriots used a strong run to take control. This time it was a 6-0 run on
Mark Jones
' serve to go ahead 21-17. Once in command the Patriots kept their
foot on the pedal, finishing the set on a 10-2 run.
There was no big run in the final set as the
Patriots gradually pulled away adding to their lead slowly until finally winning
four of the final five points to take a 25-20 decision in the final set.
The Patriots return to action on Friday, March 18,
when they play at Loyola (Chicago) at 7 p.m.
