The outdoor track and field season began this weekend for
the George Mason Patriots and Lavell Handy wasted no time with a memorable
performance as the junior ran one of the fastest times in school history in the
110-meter hurdles. Handy won the event in a time of 14.17, posting an NCAA
regional qualifying time. It was the ninth-fastest time in school history.
Handy, whose time also qualified him for the IC4A
Championships, was one of three individual Patriots to qualify for the IC4As
this weekend.
Kevin Wilson
ran a 48.44 in the 400-meters to finish fourth in
the event while
Dwight Webley
was third in the long jump invitational with a
leap of 7.14 meters. Also qualifying was the men's 4X800-meter relay team of
Parker Boudreau, Anthony LaMastro
,
Michael Pachella
and
Tyler Golden
, as they
finished second with a time of 7:37.03. Pachella also posted a top-three finish
in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.08.
David Wellington
won the decathlon, scoring 6,122 points.
Gustavo Osorio
was third with 5,877 points. Also with a top three finish was
Patrick Dietrick
, who was second in the pole vault, clearing 4.45 meters.
Meanwhile, the 3000 meters, Boudreau, LaMastro, Robert Reynolds and Alex
Zyryanov finished first through fourth with times of 8:22.60, 8:24.08, 8:25.81
and 8:32.70, respectively.
The women's team did not have any NCAA or ECAC qualifiers
but several athletes posted top three finishes. Taren Henry won the high jump
with a height of 1.55 meters while
Dominique Graham
tied for second in the high
jump invitational with a leap of 1.65 meters.
Mandissa Marshall
was second in
the pole vault with a clearance of 3.65 meters, Rochelle Sceats was second in
the 3000 meters in 9:49.63 and
Grace Mavugara
was third in the long jump
invitational with a jump of 5.55 meters.
Up next for the track and field teams is a trip to the
Raleigh Relays this coming weekend.
