The George Mason men's baseball team played 10
innings on Saturday afternoon at the University of Delaware and the Patriots
came away with a pair of 10-7 defeats as the teams resolved a suspended game,
then played nine innings at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The day started with Delaware and the Patriots
resuming a 7-7 contest in the top of the 11th
. Darkness had halted
the game the previous evening. The Patriots went in order in the top of the
frame but in the bottom of the inning, Dave Anderson doubled with one out, D.J.
Long reached on a throwing error by shortstop Chris Cook
, and Pat Dameron
followed with a walk-off homer to give the Blue Hens a 10-7 victory.
In the second game, Delaware used a six-run second
inning to take control but Mason responded with six runs combined in the third
and fourth to tie the game. But Delaware scored four of the game's final runs
to clinch the win.The Patriots stranded 23 base runners in the two games, 13 in
the first and 10 in the second.
In the second game, Delaware opened the second with
an Aaron Mascoe double, a Hank Yates singled and a Nick Ferdinand single to
make it 1-0. Logan Gallagher followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Dylan Shupe singled and Anderson walked to load the bases and after a
strikeout, Dameron hit a two-run two-out single to make it 4-0. A wild pitch
brought home Anderson from third, and with Dameron now on second, he was able
to score on a Steve Ulaky single.
The Patriots countered with two in the third as Jake
Leonardo was hit by a pitch, went to second on a Jeremy Haas
single, and after
a fielding error on Cook's sacrifice bunt attempt loaded the bases, Brig Tison
had an RBI ground out and Dan Schafferman
hit a sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
In the fourth, Nick Allen
hit a two-out double, Leonardo followed with an RBI
single and Haas hit a two-run homer to make it 6-5. Cook and Tison followed
with singles and when the right fielder misplayed Tison's hit, Cook came home
to score the tying run.
It stayed 6-6 until the fifth when Ulaky doubled and
Mascoe singled to make it 7-6. Mascoe took third on a Yates grounder and scored
on a ground ball by Ferdinand. Mason came back with a run in the eighth when
Allen singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and after Haas walked and Cook
was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Tison walked to make it 8-7. But the
Patriots couldn't get the tying run home as Schafferman struck out and Zack
Helgeson popped out.
In the eighth, A leadoff triple was followed by a
one-out intentional walk and after Long was hit by a pitch, Ferdinand scored on
a throwing error by the catcher, Leonardo. Pinch runner E.J. Stoltzfus scored
on a wild pitch to account for the final run of the game.
Allen had two hits in each game while Tison extended
his hitting streak to 12 games with base knocks in each contest. Schafferman
was 2 for 3 with three RBI in the first game while Haas was 3 for 3 with two
RBI in the second game. Dameron was 3 for 7 with six RBI in the two games while
Ulaky and Mascoe had multiple hits in each contest. The two teams will finish
the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
