The George Mason men's volleyball team fell behind
Juniata for the second time this season and for the second time the Patriots
rallied to beat the Eagles as the Patriots earned a road win on Saturday, 3-1.
In an earlier meeting between the teams in Fairfax, Juniata led 2-0 only to see
Mason rally for a 3-2 win. This time, Mason dropped the first set before coming
back for the 22-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-17 win.
Mark Jones had 24 kills while hitting .422, Shaun
Sibley had eight kills while hitting .727, Patrick Maloney had eight kills
while hitting .368 and Brandon Joyner had 46 assists and nine digs. Mason had a
13.5-5.5 edge in blocks and outhit Juniata, .357-.227. The Eagles got double-digit
kills from Ben Wolf (11, .625), Chris Vrooman (11, .421) and Alex McColgin (12,
.200).
Mason (8-2, 2-0) started slow on Friday as Juniata
used a 6-1 run midway through the first set to go ahead 14-11. From there Mason
was able to pull to within two just once as Juniata (9-4, 2-0) went ahead 1-0.
For awhile, the second set threatened to be more of the same as the Patriots
went ahead 14-11 only to see Juniata win seven of the next nine points to take
an 18-16 lead. The Eagles even led 19-17 before a 3-0 run put the Patriots back
on top. Mason was able to win four of the final five points, though, as Juniata
suffered a pair of attack errors as well as a service error.
The Patriots dominated in the third set as they hit
better than 34 percent while Juniata had a negative hitting percentage. A 6-0
run turned a slim 11-10 lead into a comfortable 17-10 advantages as Mason won
14 of the final 18 points. Mason had its best hitting set of the night in the
final set as the Patriots hit 43 percent and built their lead early, turning a
4-4 contest into a 14-7 affair. From there the Eagles got no closer than four
the rest of the way.
The Patriots continue their six-match road trip on
Friday when the Patriots play at Springfield in an EIVA Tait Division match.
