FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason shot 42.1 percent from the field and 46.2 percent from three-point range to defeat a strong Delaware team, 67-56, Thursday night in the Patriot Center. The win snapped a four-game win streak the Blue Hens held entering the matchup and completed the regular season sweep of Delaware. Mason improved to 6-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 12-13 overall, while Delaware dipped to 15-10 (8-6 CAA).
Three Patriots posted double-figure scoring numbers led by Brittany Poindexter with 15. Amber Easter followed with 14 and Ashleigh Braxton completed the trio with 12, going 4-for-6 from three-point range. Poindexter recorded her second double-double of the season leading Mason on the boards, pulling down 10 as the Patriots edged the Blue Hens, 35-34, on the glass. The Patriots outrebounded Delaware 22-16 in the second half. Mason distributed the ball well on the floor, collecting 16 assists. Rahneeka Saunders led with four and chipped in nine points going 4-for-4 at the free throw line.
Lauren Carra paced the Blue Hens with 16 points and kept Elena Delle Donne, the team's leading scorer, to 14 points, 10 below her average. Danielle Parker led on the glass with six.
Mason hit 71.4 percent from three-point range in the first half helped by a 3-of-4 effort from Braxton to claim a 35-26 halftime advantage. The Patriots trailed by four points, 25-21, with 3:29 on the clock and closed the half using a 14-1 run with three treys including a Brittany Eley triple from the top of the key as the clock expired for the break.
Delaware held its largest lead of the half of five points at the 11:14 marker and hit 9-of-11 free throws in the opening 20 minutes. Carra connected on a one-and-one at 3:29 before Rahneeka Saunders sparked the first half run from the Patriots. Carra led the Blue Hens with 11 first half points, while Braxton paced the Patriots with nine. Both teams had trouble controlling the ball as 24 turnovers were committed between the teams, but Mason capitalized on Delaware's 13 errors, converting for 17 points.
The Blue Hens kept the Patriots quiet for nearly the first three minutes of the second half, but Mason regrouped and responded, answering with a 6-0 run kept alive with two buckets from Easter, taking a 41-30 lead with 15:53 to play. Delaware used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to five points, 44-39, as time hit 11:26. Poindexter drained the next two buckets to put the Patriots back up by nine with 10:04 to play.
Delaware kept Mason's lead to single digits, cutting it to six before Saunders sparked a 9-0 Patriot run setting up a 15 point advantage for Mason, 61-46, with 3:29 remaining. The Blue Hens connected on two old-fashioned three-point plays and hit a jumper with 2:18 left, moving the score back to a single digit advantage. Mason went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe over the final two minutes to seal the 67-56 victory.
George Mason plays host to Towson on the annual Pink Zone date on Sunday, February 20. Tip inside the Patriot Center is slated for 2 p.m. Fans wearing pink to the game will receive a $2 ticket at the box office and George Mason students with a valid ID will receive a free pink t-shirt, while supplies last, for the Game of the Week promotion.
