HARRISONBURG, Va. -
Senior
Brittany Poindexter
eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark with 3:10 to play in the second half as the George Mason women's basketball team fell 53-40 to James Madison Sunday afternoon in the JMU Convocation Center. Mason dipped to 11-13 overall and 5-8 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while JMU improved to 19-6, 12-1 winning its tenth straight contest.
Poindexter became the 14th
player in George Mason women's basketball history to cross the 1,000-career point milestone hitting a jumper at the 3:10 mark in the second half. Poindexter has been the team's leading scorer in seven outings this season and has four 20-point games with a season-high 22 points coming at George Washington. The last Patriot to cross the plateau was Vernessa Neamo in 2004.
Poindexter and
Taleia Moton
combined to put up 20 points, 10 points apiece, to pace the Patriots. Lauren Jimenez led the Dukes with 16 points, while Dawn Evans, the team's leading scorer, was held to well below her scoring average, posting 14. It marks only the ninth time this season Evans was held to under 20 points.
James Madison won the edge on glass, 51-34, for the difference in the ballgame and converted 17 offensive boards into 16 second chance points. The Patriots shot 90.0 percent from the free throw line, going 10-for-11 with Moton hitting 4-of-5.
Behind Jimenez's nine first-half points, James Madison carried a 28-18 lead at halftime. The Dukes took a 17-10 lead by 10:33 and after a scoreless drought from both teams from the second to third media timeouts, JMU used a 10-4 run to take a 27-14 advantage with 3:17 to play in the first. Mason closed the period with a 4-1 run picking up free throws from Angelee LaTouche
and Moton for the halftime score.
Poindexter opened the second half draining a bucket cutting the score to eight points, but the Dukes responded breaking open a 17 point margin with 14:26 to play. JMU slowly built upon its lead using strong defense, claiming a 19 point lead, 47-28, on an old-fashioned three-point play from Jimenez at 8:49. With 3:10 on the clock, Poindexter hit a jumper from the left wing to surpass the 1,000-career point mark.
Brittany Eley
converted a Moton steal for the final field goal of the game accounting for the final score.
Mason returns to action opening a two-game homestand welcoming Delaware to the Patriot Center on Thursday, Feb. 17. Tip in Fairfax is slated for 7 p.m.
