RICHMOND, Va. - George Mason's Taleia Moton was named the
Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week by the
league office on Monday after averaging 24.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.0 steals
and 4.0 assists during Mason's two victories over the past week.
Moton, a 5'6" guard from Fort Washington, Md., scored 16
second-half points at Stony Brook to lead the Patriots to a 54-50 victory after
trailing for 37 minutes in the contest. Moton finished with 18 points, five
rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the way for Mason.
On Sunday, Moton drained 30 points against UNC Asheville to
match her career-high and lead the Patriots to an 88-59 victory over the
Bulldogs. Moton was 14-of-17 from the floor and recorded five steals, four
rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes of action. It marked the second time
this season Moton has scored 30 points with the first setting a career-high at
Longwood on November 17.
"Taleia has done a great job and has played consistently
well on both ends of the floor for our team in these first five games,"
commented head coach Jeri Porter. "Her attitude and work ethic have really paid
off and this CAA honor is well deserved."
For the season, Moton is averaging 21.6 points, 4.0
rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Among CAA statistical leaders,
Moton currently ranks third in scoring, fifth in minutes played (35.2), sixth
in steals (2.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9) and eighth in assists (3.8).
Nationally, Moton currently ranks 14th in points per game.
The recognition marks the first weekly honor in Moton's
two-year playing career in the Green and Gold. Teammate Amber Easter was the
last Patriot to receive a CAA weekly award earning Rookie of the Week on
November 30, 2009. The last Mason player to be tabbed CAA Player of the Week
dates back to Lateisha Wade on November 26, 2007.
Moton shares this week's recognition with Towson's Krystal
Parnell. Hofstra's Andreana Thomas was named the Rookie of the Week.
The Patriots, currently 4-1 on the season,
return to the court on Thursday welcoming Massachusetts to the Patriot Center
for a 7 p.m. tip.
