The ECAC Championships this weekend will host two events
this Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. Men's cross
country will finish their season in the IC4A Championships, while the women
will compete in the ECAC Championship race.
Last season both the men and women team finished sixth in competition,
this year they will look to improve on that standing and build momentum for
next season.
"This meet will be
great momentum for the girls' confidence for next year, as well as for the
track season coming up," said Associate Head Coach Sita Waru-Ewell. "We are racing in the University division and
I think it will be a good chance to race against teams we have not competed
against so the girls will be relaxed and excited to compete."
Due to a few nagging injuries, the men's team will race a
combination of top performers throughout the year, along with some of the
younger runners on the team. "It will be
an interesting lineup for us," said Head Coach Andrew Gerard. "It is a good chance for some of the guys who
haven't gotten a chance to race and some of the guys who are still moving
strongly forward through the year to finish off the season."
The women will bring eight runners on the trip this
weekend. Seniors Sandy Castro and Nao Ma
will compete in their final race of their careers, however as a whole the team
is extremely young, including four freshmen (Catherine Pulley, Peyton Lowe,
Lauren Givens and Maggie Underwood), sophomore Victoria Samyn and junior
Monique McKenzie. "I think this race
will be great for the freshmen," said Ewell.
"We are hoping to place in one of the top positions and end the season
on a high note."
The event is scheduled to begin at 10am with the men's race,
followed at its conclusion by the women's 5K.
"Our guys are still hungry and ready to go," reflected Gerard. "We still have a fair amount to get done at
this end of the season period and we are not overlooking this meet. Our goal is to contend for a trophy in this
meet."
