WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The George Mason men's soccer team
outshot No. 22 William and Mary 25-8, including a 9-5 shots on goal advantage,
but the Tribe used a penalty kick in the 81st minute to capture the
conference win Saturday night. With the win at Martin Family Stadium at
Albert-Daly Field, the Tribe improved to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Colonial Athletic
Association play, while Mason moves to 4-4-3, 1-2-1.
Mason dominated possession the entire game, but neither team
was able to get on the scoreboard for the first 80 minutes of action. The
Patriots produced an offensive attack throughout the contest and put five shots
on frame in the opening stanza with the first coming on a Wesley Sever shot in
the 18th minute. Leo Stolz put a shot on goal from 25 yards out,
forcing Tribe goalkeeper Colin Smolinsky to make a save on his left side in the
18th minute.
The Patriots saw its final scoring threat of the period come
in the 28th minute, also off the foot of Stolz. Approaching from the
left side, Stolz attempted a shot from 20 yards out, but Smolinsky made the
diving stop on the far post to keep the scoreboard clear at intermission.
Patriot goalkeeper Sean Cote was forced into his first of three saves in the half
just over a minute into action. Cote made a diving stop against a Roshan Patel header
and scooped up his final save of the period on a Chris Perez shot in the 24th
minute.
Timmy Mulgrew and Ryan Gracia both put shots on frame in the
second half before William and Mary got on the scoreboard in the 81st
minute. Nicolas Abrigo played a long ball to Chris Albiston who drew the foul
inside the penalty box for the PK. Abrigo converted the PK for the game-winner
at the 80:37 mark.
The Patriots rallied late in the second half, but was unable
to score the equalizer. In the 83rd minute, Mason tried to knot the
score when Paul Andrews headed a shot from three-yards out on the right side that
hit the post. The Patriots continued to attack late in the period putting two
shots on goal in the final five minutes from Verneri Valimaa and Andrews, but
Smolinsky was in position to keep the visiting squad off the board for the win.
Stolz led the Patriots with five attempts in the contest,
while Abrigo was the only member of the Tribe to record a multi-shot game with
two attempts. Smolinsky picked up a career-high nine saves, while Cote recorded four. Mason also held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
"It was a tough result tonight," commented head coach Greg
Andrulis. "We played exceptionally well, but were unable to finish our chances.
We will get back on track and prepare for Wednesday."
Mason returns to the pitch at George Mason Stadium on
Wednesday, October 12 welcoming Towson for a 7 p.m. matchup.
