FAIRFAX, Va. - Five
Patriots scored in double figures and the George Mason men's basketball team
survived an early scare, defeating Lycoming 90-62 in exhibition action Monday
evening at the Patriot Center.
Sophomore
Bryon Allen and freshman Erik Copes led the way with 13 points apiece, while
seniors Mike Morrison and Ryan Pearson were joined by sophomore Jonathan
Arledge in contributing 11 points each. Pearson posted the lone double-double
of the night as he pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Redshirt
sophomore Paris Bennett dished out five assists to lead Mason while Allen also
had a team high with three steals. Patrick Dougher and Kevin Anthony scored 15
and 13 points, respectively, to lead the way for the Warriors, who were
out-rebounded by a 47-to-28 margin.
Mason
opened with a 5-2 lead, but the Warriors tied the score on a 3-pointer by Dougher
just under three minutes into the contest. The teams traded buckets and
Lycoming's first lead came at the 15-minute mark on a layup by Jerald Williams
at 9-7. The game remained tight from then on, with the lead changing hands nine
times.
The
Patriots broke through in the final six minutes of the first half though,
beginning with an 18-0 run spanning more than five minutes. Breaking a 26-26
tie, Mason went on to lead 44-26 after a pair of free throws by Allen at the
44-second mark. Chris Foreman's layup broke the scoring drought for the
Warriors with 34 seconds remaining, setting the halftime margin of 44-28.
Mason
shook off a sluggish start from the field and finished the opening half
13-of-29 shooting (44.8 percent), compared to a 35.5 mark for the Warriors. The
Patriots connected on 16 of their 23 free throw attempts, as Lycoming was
whistled for 18 personal fouls compared to five for Mason.
The
Patriots also held a 24-to-15 advantage off the glass. Morrison and Allen led
the scoring in the opening stanza, as each chipped in 11 points while Pearson
pulled down six first-half rebounds.
The
Green and Gold's lead was never threatened in the second half, one which saw
the Patriots' field goal shooting improve to 57.1 percent (16-of-28).
The
Patriots officially open the season on Friday, November 11 hosting Rhode
Island. That game is the second half of a women's-men's doubleheader that
begins at 5 p.m. as head coach Jeri Porter's squad opens its season against
American.
