FAIRFAX, Va. - Liz Hodges scored the game-winner as the
George Mason women's soccer team clinched its berth into the Colonial Athletic
Association Championship shutting out Towson 2-0 Saturday afternoon at George Mason
Stadium. Tiana Kallenberger added to Mason's lead as the Patriots improved to
8-6-5 this season and 5-3-3 in league action. Towson dipped to 9-10, 4-7.
"The environment today kept changing which changed the play
of the game," said head coach Diane Drake. "I was very proud of the team for
putting together a strong win. We showed a lot of mental toughness and
resiliency on the field. Now, our goal is to challenge for a CAA Championship."
On a snow-filled Senior Day, Hodges scored midway through the first half for what proved
to be the game-winner. Kallenberger gathered the ball on the right side and as
Towson goalkeeper Erin Quinn could not control the cross attempt, Hodges came
in and scored in the 32nd minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lyndse Hokanson picked up two saves in
the opening half to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. Less than a minute off
the clock, Towson's Cheyenne Skidmore forced Hokanson into her first save as
Annie Hillin recorded Towson's second and final shot on goal in the 22nd
minute.
Towson could not get a shot off in the second half as Mason
held a 7-0 margin in shots in the final 45 minutes. Kallenberger added an
insurance goal for the Patriots with just over three minutes remaining in the
contest. Jazmin Cardoso, who was credited with an assist on the play, took a
free kick for Mason. Cardoso sent the free kick into the box and Kallenberger
was able to score off a deflection in the 87th minute for the 2-0
lead.
Playing the full game in net, Hokanson made two saves en
route to her fifth shutout of the season, while Quinn made seven stops. Mason
finished the contest with a 16-5 advantage in shots and 9-2 margin in shots on
goal. Hodges led the Patriots with five shots, putting four on frame.
Seeding for the CAA Championship will be
announced following the conclusion of CAA women's soccer play Sunday afternoon.
The Championship will take place at William & Mary November 3, 4 & 6.
