FAIRFAX, Va. - Playing through steady rain and snow, the
George Mason men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Colonial Athletic
Association foe Georgia State Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium.
With the loss, Mason moved to 7-7-3 overall and 4-5-1 in
league play, while Georgia State improved to 11-5-1, 5-4.
Jordan Weise scored the game-winner for the Panthers in the
39th minute burying his own rebound. Alex Vivanco set Weise up with
a pass from the far side as Weise fired a shot to a diving Sean Cote who made
his lone save of the contest. The direct rebound landed at Weise's feet as the
freshman found the open net for the 1-0 advantage.
The Patriots outshot the Panthers 10-3 in the first half and
put three shots on goal. Taylor Morgan threatened first for Mason with a shot
on frame in the 12th minute off a Ryan Gracia blocked shot. Gracia
then saw a scoring opportunity in the 30th minute firing a shot from
15-yards out in the middle of the box, directly into the hands of Panther
goalkeeper Vincent Foermer. Less than a minute later, Leo Stolz saw a solid
opportunity approaching on the far side. Stolz blasted a shot from 25-yards
out, but the shot hit the far post.
Georgia State doubled its lead in the 60th minute
as Vivanco scored unassisted. The Panther gained possession off a clear and
beat a Mason defender to find the right corner of the net to give GSU a 2-0
lead.
Mason's best chance in the second half occurred in the 71st
minute when A.J. Sheta took a free kick that looked on path to the right corner
of the net, but instead hit the crossbar. On the rebound, Gracia tried to
finish the play, but the shot went wide.
Foermer preserved the Panther lead making a diving save on a
Hugh Roberts shot in the 76th minute before stopping a Leo Stolz
shot on frame in the 80th minute.
The Patriots finished the contest with a 22-4 shot advantage
and a 7-3 shots on goal edge. Stolz led the Patriots with five shots, while
Gracia and Timmy Mulgrew each recorded four. Cote played 74 minutes in net and
recorded one save before Dustin Butcher played the final 15 minutes. For
Georgia State, Foermer played the full game between the pipes and made seven
stops to keep Mason off the scoreboard. Mason also held an 11-1 advantage in
corner kicks.
Mason returns to the pitch and closes out regular season
play at UNCW on Saturday, November 5 at 7 p.m.
