ATLANTA - The George Mason women's volleyball team pushed the
homestanding Panthers of Georgia State to the brink, but GSU was able to defend
its home court with a five-set Colonial Athletic Association victory over the
Patriots on Friday evening at the GSU Sports Arena. Set scores were 25-19,
23-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-9 as the Patriots dropped to 7-15 (2-8 CAA) while GSU improved
to 11-15 (5-4 CAA).
Senior Noelle Fanella led the Patriots with 19 kills while
sophomore Lana Zonjic added 17. Both recorded double-doubles as they
contributed 19 and 17 digs, respectively. Junior Lauren Goodell led the team
with 47 assists while senior Kelly McCarter posted a match-high 26 digs. Four
Panthers recorded double-digit kills, led by Vineece Verdun's 23.
Georgia State never trailed in the opening set as they
started out the match with the first two points. Mason kept it close with five
being the largest margin until the final stretch which saw the Panthers close
out with five straight points. The Patriots trailed 18-13 before a 6-2 run by
the Green and Gold cut it to 20-19. That run was ended by the final five points
going to the Panthers.
The second set was close in the early going, tied at 12
before a 5-1 run gave GSU a 17-13 lead. Mason matched the feat to tie the score
at 18, and seized control for good with back-to-back points to break a 21-all
deadlock. Zonjic's kill on the second set point attempt sent the teams to the
locker rooms tied at one set all.
Set three was one marked with runs, as the Patriots broke a
8-8 tie with a 7-1 run to lead 15-9. Holding that six-point lead at 21-15, the
Panthers rattled off 10 straight points to go up two sets to one. Mason
answered a 4-1 opening run by Georgia State in the fourth set with an 11-2
scoring stretch. The Patriots never
trailed again in the fourth, leading by as many as 10 points including
24-14. Four straight Panther points cut
into the lead, but a GSU service error sent the match into the fifth set.
After the teams traded the first six points, three straight
from the Panthers made it 6-3 and the home team would not relinquish the lead.
Mason got as close as two including 10-8, but four in a row set up match point
for the Panthers. After an error, a Kaylee McGrew kill finished off the victory
for Georgia State.
Mason will close out its road trip on Sunday afternoon at
UNCW, the Patriots' final road match of the 2011 season. First serve is set for
1 p.m.
