NEWARK, Del. - The George Mason men's soccer team knotted
the score in the 77th minute on a Leo Stolz goal, but Delaware
rallied for the 2-1 victory in overtime Wednesday night in Colonial Athletic
Association play at Delaware Mini-Stadium. The goal marked the first collegiate
career goal for Stolz.
The Patriots (5-6-3, 2-4-1 CAA) outshot the Blue Hens
(9-3-1, 4-3 CAA) 10-2 in the opening stanza, but failed to connect as the teams
went into intermission scoreless. Mason immediately began its attack, firing
off two shots on goal within the first five minutes as Timmy Mulgrew forced Delaware
goalkeeper Kris Devaux into his first two saves. The Patriots saw another shot
on frame in the 15th minute by Taylor Morgan before the home squad recorded
its first shot in the 22nd minute. Stolz put together Mason's final
scoring opportunity in the 41st minute, but Devaux picked up the
save to close the half.
Delaware came out strong to start the second half as Sean
Cote made his first stop on a Ben Raymond shot in the 54th minute.
With Roberto Gimenez' ninth goal of the season, the Blue Hens broke through 13
minutes later for the 1-0 advantage. Gimenez blasted a shot into the top left
corner from 30 yards out for the goal.
Stolz tied the score at 1-1 just under 10 minutes later
splitting a pair of Blue Hen defenders for his first goal in a Mason uniform.
Raymond and Gimenez both put shots on goal in the final minutes, but could not
find the back of the net as the conference foes entered overtime knotted at 1-1.
Seven minutes and 16 seconds into overtime, Delaware scored
the game-winner when Evans Frimpong set up Kyle Ellis for the goal and 2-1
victory.
Mason finished the contest with a 15-10 shot advantage and a
7-5 shots on goal lead. Stolz paced the offense putting three of four shots
attempted on frame. Mulgrew recorded three shots, two on goal. Cote played the
full game in net and recorded three saves, while Devaux made six stops.
Mason returns to Fairfax to welcome Northeastern on
Saturday, October 22 for a 7 p.m. matchup. The contest is also the Game of the
Week and all Mason students with a valid ID will receive a free sweatshirt
backpack.
