ATLANTA, Ga. - The George Mason women's soccer team scored
just before halftime to knot the score at 1-all as the Patriots played to a 1-1
double-overtime draw at Georgia State Sunday afternoon. Jazmin Cardoso scored
the lone goal for Mason in the Colonial Athletic Association matchup as the
Patriots moved to 6-5-5 on the season and 3-2-3 in league play, while the
Panthers stand at 6-10-1, 3-4-1.
"It was a very intense and hard-fought match against a very
athletic and direct Georgia State team," noted head coach Diane Drake. "We
played very hard and now we are excited to return home for the next three games."
Georgia State struck first, scoring in the 19th
minute. Jewel Evans scored unassisted after intercepting a pass from Mason and found
the back of the net from the top of the box for the 1-0 lead.
The Patriots posed a threat after the goal when a Tiana
Kallenberger shot was blocked and on the rebound, Alyssa Andersen drilled a
shot, but GSU goalkeeper Kellianne Collins was in position for the save.
Jazmin Cardoso knotted the game at 1-all at the 44:24 mark
scoring her second goal of the season. Andersen set Cardoso up as the Patriot
took a shot from the top of the box that hit the cross bar and bounced down on
the goal line to send the teams into intermission at 1-1.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the second half as the teams
attempted five shots on goal - three by Mason. The Panthers tried to regain the
lead early in the stanza as Lyndse Hokanson picked up her third save of the
contest on a Lani Huntley shot in the 53rd minute. Mason countered with
a Liz Hodges shot on goal coming in the 59th minute before Hokanson
made her fourth and final stop of the afternoon on an Alyssia Feronti shot in
the 61st minute. Cardoso attempted to give Mason its first lead of
the contest in the 74th minute, but Collins came up with the save to
keep the score 1-1.
The Panthers saw little opportunity the remainder of
regulation as the Patriots posed a pair of threats to close the period. In the
87th minute, a Cardoso shot was blocked out and on the rebound, the
Patriot sent a shot high, before Collins came up with a save at the 89:02 mark
on a Kallenberger header to keep the scoreboard clean for the second half.
In overtime, Mason saw a couple solid opportunities and attempted
three shots, but could not find the back of the net, as GSU was limited to two
shots in the first overtime period. Crissy Parker's shot with less than a
minute in the first overtime went just wide left as Mary Kate Lowry was in
position to setup a cross pass in the second overtime, but the play was cleared
away. Mason's defense opened no opportunity for the Panthers in the second half
as the teams closed the 1-1 draw.
Each team posted five shots on goal as Mason outshot GSU
overall, 16-11. Cardoso and Kallenberger each attempted five shots to pace the
Patriot's offense. Hokanson played the full game in net and recorded four saves
as did Georgia State's keeper.
Mason returns to the pitch and opens a
three-game homestand on Friday, October 21 welcoming Delaware for a 6 p.m.
contest.
