HARRISONBURG, Va. - The George Mason men's soccer team tied
the match at 1-all in the 76th minute, but Colonial
Athletic Association foe No. 17 James Madison rallied for a 2-1 victory
Saturday evening at JMU Soccer Complex. Derek Markheim scored his first goal of
the season off an assist from Timmy Mulgrew to knot the game in the second
half.
Mason (5-5-3, 2-3-1 CAA) outshot the Dukes 13-10 in the
contest and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal behind Mulgrew's and Ryan
Gracia's two shots on frame apiece. Mulgrew took a team-high four shots in the contest.
Goalkeeper Sean Cote played the full game between the pipes and recorded two
saves, while Justin Epperson made seven stops for James Madison (9-2-1, 5-1-0
CAA) to keep the Dukes perfect at home this season.
After a scoreless opening half in which the Patriots put
three shots on goal to the Dukes' one, JMU struck early in the second half to
take the lead. After drawing a foul in the penalty box, the Dukes' Patrick
Innes converted the PK at the 50:40 mark to give James Madison a 1-0 advantage.
The Patriots saw a solid scoring opportunity six minutes
later on a Mulgrew shot that hit the post as Mulgrew threatened again in the 66th
minute with a shot on frame. Gracia forced Epperson into a save in the 71st
minute before Mason struck with its goal just under five minutes later. Mulgrew
setup the play as Markheim finished from 14-yards out, sending a shot into the
right corner of the net to tie the match at 1-all.
Jimmy Simpson notched
the game-winner at the 81:13 mark, scoring from four-yards out off a pass from
Paul Wyatt on the right. Mason saw an opportunity to tie the contest with less
than a minute to play when Leo Stolz drove Epperson into his seventh and final
save of the night to close the contest.
JMU shares the top spot in the CAA standings with Old Dominion and William and Mary.
The Patriots continue league action traveling to Delaware on
Wednesday, October 19 for a 7 p.m. match.
