Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep George Washington

Washington, D.C. - The Mason swimming and diving teams traveled to George Washington today and came away with close wins on both the men's and women's team.  In the final meet of the regular season the men defeated GW by a score of 132-127 and the women won a 132-126 matchup.

Ashley Danner led the women Patriots with two first place finishes and a second place finish.  She placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.95 and first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.06.  She posted a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.55.

Other top finishes on the women's side included Jenny Kane, who finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.65, second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.74) and second in the 200-yard IM (2:12.37).  Nicole Harmon posted a first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.51 and Rebecca Anderson also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a final time of 5:08.25.  The women finished first and second in the 200-yard medley relay with times of 1:48.75 and 1:52.97, respectively. 

For the men, Fernando Rubio finished first in two events and second in another.  His first place finishes came in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:45.63) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.90), and his second place finish was in the 200-yard IM (1:56.08).  Preston Wolter also posted two first place finishes for the men and added a fourth place finish as well.  He came in first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:45.04 and finished with a time of 4:45.45 in the 500-yard freestyle which was also good for first.  He was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, recording a time of 21.48. 

Austin Witherow was the leader in the two events he participated in.  These included the 100-yard butterfly where he posted a time of 52.30 and the 100-yard backstroke where he finished in a time of 53.21.  Jared Melkun was the final member of the men's team that finished first in an event.  His first place finish came in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.61) and he also finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.27. 

The Patriots will swim again at the end of February when they host the CAA Championships.  It is scheduled to take place from February 24-26.
