The George Mason men's volleyball team put together
yet another dominating performance on Saturday night as the Patriots easily
dispatched of Sacred Heart, topping the Pioneers, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18. The win
improved Mason to 5-1 on the year while Sacred Heart fell to 0-1.
Joe Norton had eight kills while hitting .500 in the
match, Mark Jones had 14 kills while hitting .375, and Patrick Maloney had
eight kills while hitting .333, as Mason hit .312 as a team. The Pioneers got
13 kills from Enzo Mackenzie but hit just .170 on the night. Brandon Joyner led
the Patriots with 34 assists while Norton had seven digs.
In the opening set, Mason jumped out to a 4-1 lead.
After building a 12-6 edge, the Pioneers trimmed it to 14-11. But Mason won six
of the next nine points to go up 20-14, and the Patriots rode the serve of
Charlie Swingle to the 25-19 first-set victory.
The second set saw the Patriots fall behind early.
Mason trailed 6-3 but used an 8-3 run to take control of the set. With a slim
13-12 lead, the Patriots rallied behind the serve of Maloney to go ahead 19-13.
Sacred Heart won four of the next six to make it a three-point set but Joe
Norton's serve helped the Patriots put it away.
The final set was again tight in the early going
with the score tied at 9-9. This time it wasn't a big run but rather the
Patriots slowly building their advantage and pulling away late. The win allowed
Mason to remain unbeaten at home on the year. The Patriots' lone loss on the
year was a 3-1 defeat at No. 10 Ohio State.
The Patriots return to action on Friday when they
host No. 12 Ball State at 7 p.m.
