Just two months ago, Omolyn Davis was on the pitch
for the Patriots, finishing off a spectacular two-year career that saw her
named an All-American as a redshirt senior. Now she has a career awaiting her
in the Women's Professional Soccer league. Davis was selected 10th
overall by the Washington Freedom on Friday afternoon.
Davis, who spent last summer playing in the USL
W-League for the Washington Freedom Futures, was the second pick of the second
round. No Colonial Athletic Association team has ever had a higher draft pick
in WPS history.
"This is an extraordinary honor for both Omolyn and our program," said Diane Drake, head coach of the Patriots. "It is a true testimony of her years of hard work. I am very excited to watch her take on this new challenge in the professional arena. She has the ability to be fantastic for the league because of her unique dribbling abilities."
Playing in 2009 for the Washington Freedom, Davis
was named an All-Star as the Freedom Futures were 10-1-1. She tied for sixth in
the league with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. A native of
Kingston, Jamaica, she was twice named first-team All-CAA and first-team NSCAA
All-Region. She led the CAA in points per game this year, was second in assists
per game and third in goals per game. She had 10 goals and nine assists on the
season and finished her career top 15 in school history in points, goals and
assists.
The Washington Freedom will open their season on
April 16 against the Philadelphia Independence at Widener University in Chester,
Pa.
