The George Mason women's soccer scored a season-high seven goals on Wednesday night as the Patriots won back-to-back games for the first time this year, beating VMI 7-0. The Patriots put six on the board in the first half as Mason's offense found its rhythm as well as the back of the Keydets' net in improving to 3-2-1 on the year. VMI fell to 0-5-0.
Redshirt senior Omolyn Davis had two goals and three assists, sophomore Tiana Kallenberger scored twice, junior Zoe Doherty had a goal and an assist and senior Kimmy Moss and junior Zania Barnum each had two assists in the victory.
Mason scored twice in the first six minutes. The opening goal came in the opening minute as Barnum found Davis who left the ball for Alyssa Andersen. The junior shot the ball from right side into the left corner to make it 1-0. The second goal saw freshman Abby Zielinski send the ball to Barnum on the left wing and she touched the ball to Kallenberger in front and the sophomore went to the right post for a two-goal lead.
In the 15th minute, Mason made it 3-0 when Andersen served a ball to Davis on the left side and her shot was saved but she touched the rebound to Kallenberger who put in her second goal of the night. In the 30th minute, Mason made it a four-goal game when Kimmy Moss played a ball through to Davis on the left side and she blasted the ball to the far post from 18 yards out. Two minutes later, Mason had a direct kick from 20 yards out and Moss rolled the ball to Davis who one-timed the ball to make it 5-0.
The final goal of the first half cam in the 43rd minute as Davis dumped the ball to Doherty on the right wing and she beat the keeper to the far post to make it 6-0 at the break. The second-half goal came in the 68th minute when Doherty found junior Ashley Mims for her first goal of the season.
"We just talked about one touch in the back third, one or two touches in the middle third and then when they got in, to play functionally quick, get the ball up, back or wide, then serve the ball in and score it. That's pretty much what they did today," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "They found a great rhythm."
Mason outshot VMI 27-2 and did not allow a shot on goal while holding a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. The Patriots will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to UMBC to face the Retrievers at 4 p.m.
