FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason women's volleyball team hosted the championship match of its 2010 Patriot Invitational on Saturday evening but ran into a hot-hitting Charlotte team which defeated the Patriots in straight sets, with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-20.
After winning all three of its matches this weekend, Charlotte (4-2) earned the tournament crown while Mason (3-3) was the runner-up. West Virginia defeated Army earlier in the evening in the third-place match.
Leading the Mason offense was senior Holly Goode, who had 10 kills. She along with junior Kelsey Bohman, who led all players with seven blocks, was named to the All-Tournament Team. Bianca Rouse paced Charlotte with 17 kills. Mason's Fernanda Bartels posted a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs. The 49ers held a .304-to-.120 hitting advantage over the Patriots in the match.
The 49ers led by as many as seven points in the early moments of the match, before the Patriots came back to tie the score at 14, part of a 6-0 run which gave them the lead at 15-14. The advantage would be short-lived, however, with Charlotte capturing the first set. Goode and Bohman each had four kills in the set.
Into the second, Charlotte took an early lead before the Patriots countered to move ahead 6-4. The 49ers pieced together a 7-1 run which gave them the lead for good as Mason's offense faltered in the set. The Patriots hit -.100 compared to a .368 mark for the 49ers.
Charlotte continued to dominate in the third, breaking a 4-4 deadlock with six in a row. Six of the next seven points went to Mason closing the gap to 12-11, but the Patriots could not overtake the 49ers as they completed the sweep. Mason returns to action with a road contest on Wednesday at Loyola (Md.), with first serve set for 7 p.m.
