When Omolyn Davis comes to practice on Monday, she's likely to find that the women's soccer coaching staff has replaced the schedule in the locker room, writing up a new one that lists every single opponent the rest of the season as William & Mary. The redshirt senior who had a hat-trick last year at Williamsburg, continued to torment the Tribe as she had two goals and an assist on Sunday. As a result, the Patriots took a convincing 4-1 victory over William & Mary, improving to 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association for the first time since 2000.
"You expect every CAA game to be a one-goal game," said Mason head coach Diane Drake. "We put 90 minutes together. We told the team after (losing in overtime to seventh-ranked) Maryland, if we play 90 minutes, we can play with anybody in our conference and we can contend for a championship."
The Patriots scored in the fifth minute to quickly grab a 1-0 lead. Tiana Kallenberger tracked down a long ball on the right wing, dribbled toward the center of the field around three defenders and left the ball for Davis who blasted the ball into the left side of the net. William & Mary responded less than a minute later as Mason dispossessed the Tribe of the ball but it made its way through the Mason defense and Cortlyn Bristol was the first player to get to it. Mason keeper Alex Bodenschatz couldn't hold onto the ball and the game was 1-1.
In the 34th minute, Mason retook the lead. In a play reminiscent of the Tribe's goal, William & Mary tried to clear the ball but instead it made its way to the midfield and an unmarked Evan Feldman who blasted the ball into the top right corner of the net from 40 yards out.
In the 69th minute, Mason added an insurance goal as Davis played a beautiful ball from 35 yards out to the left wing hitting Alyssa Andersen in stride and the junior settled the ball and gently placed it into the back right corner of the net. In the 73rd minute, Davis made certain that every healthy Mason player would see the pitch as she took a free kick from 30 yards and put it in the bottom left corner of the net. In 170 career minutes against the Tribe, Davis has five goals and an assist.
The Patriots will return to action on Thursday when they host VCU at 6 p.m.
